A section of people raised allegation that the border wing of the police has harassed the people of a certain community in the name of detecting illegal foreigners in Dima Hasao district.

The locals hailing areas like Mandardisa, Hatikhali and Langting in the district are worried over such harassment and high-handedness by Border Police.

It may be mentioned that in those areas, the foreigner detection operation is led by one Basumatary, an Assistant Inspector of Border Police.

As per information, the police team camping in some shop in the said areas calls the locals and orders to show documents to prove their citizenship and asks the people, who fail to show any document, to Haflong.

But the locals alleged that even after having valid documents, some of the Indians citizens have been mentally harassed by the police.

On Tuesday, this came to light when Northeast Now reaches Mandardisa from Langting in the hill district and had interactions with the locals about the operation carried out by the police for foreigners’ detection.

Though some of the locals refrained from revealing anything fearing police action, a local informed that despite having valid documents as Indian citizen, he had to give money to police.

Similarly, a member of a Bengali Hindu family from Mandardisa, who has documents of 1951 National Register of Citizens besides document of his father being appointed in Indian Railways in 1961, alleged that he also had to give money to the police.

On the other hand, in Hatikhali also, a team of four-five Border Police personnel which arriving at the weekly market has been carrying out operation to detect foreigners since the last one year, informed the locals.

Locals of Hatikhali, at night the Border Police personnel harass the people searching for documents to prove Indian citizenship and though they show valid documents, they allegedly take away signatures on black papers.

Besides, issuing notices, the people are called to Haflong and asking various questions, give proposals for solving issues.

As per information, of late, a Bengali Hindu youth of Hatikhali, Uttam Das, has become a victim of the Border Police atrocity, who along with some others has been sent to jail.
