All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) had staged three-hour sit-in demonstration at Gandhi Maidan in Assam’s Bongaigaon demanding re-creation of historical ‘Kamatapur state’ and ‘Scheduled Tribe status’ to its community.

Following the demonstration, the students’ body also submitted a 10-page memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the Deputy Commissioner.

Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti leader Akhil Gogoi had joined the demonstration and announced his full support to Koch Rajbongshi issues and called upon the community to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 to protect the political rights of the indigenous communities of the State.

Gogoi had cast doubt on the stand of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) regarding the Bill and warned the party that if it supports the Bill, people of the State would never forgive it.

He also said that if the Bill is passed and the Koch Rajbongshi community does not get tribal status all the indigenous communities would lose their political power and rights for ever.

The peasant leader had advised the union to call long-duration shut-downs and blockades so that the government can feel the need of addressing its demands soon.
