The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) on Wednesday questioned Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for not taking any action against the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Hojai legislator Shiladitya Dev for allegedly making ‘communal’ statements.
Criticising Assam Chief Minister Sonowal over his silence over Shiladitya’s recent statement over the NRC update process, AIUDF general secretary Hafiz Rafiqul Islam questioned, “Why has the CM not taken any action against BJP MLA Shiladitya Dev till date, whereas he took strong action against the Trinamool Congress delegation which recently visited the State?”
In a press communiqué, Islam stated that it is not BJP’s Shiladitya Dev to decide who would become Assam Chief Minister in 2026.
Islam also said, “Shiladitya Dev has been doing communal politics in the State even more than the Trinamool Congress leaders.”
Bringing allegations against Dev, the AIUDF general secretary also said, “Shiladitya Dev has been continuously making communal statements to create unrest in the State since the BJP formed coalition Government in the State. Dev always makes statements opposite to CM Sonowal.”
It may be mentioned that BJP’s Hojai legislator on Saturday last had said, “After publication of the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), I am sure Badruddin Ajmal is going to be the next CM of the State in 2026. Assam, which is known as the land of Sankar-Madhav, will be known as the land of Ajmal-Ajan.”
