Seven members of an Islamist militant group were sentenced to death by a Bangladesh court for carrying out an attack on a cafe in 2016 that killed 22 people.

Public prosecutor Golam Sarwar Khan informed media that cHarges against seven of the eight accused were awarded the highest punishment since the charges against them were “proven beyond doubt”.

The attack at the Holey Artisan cafe on July 1, 2016, was claimed by the Islamic State (IS) group and was Bangladesh’s deadliest terrorist attack.

Most of the victims were foreigners- mostly Italian and Japanese.

Since the attack, Bangladesh authorities have led a brutal crackdown on militants in the country.
