Doomdooma: Delhi Police have arrested social media influencer Amir Shokeen in connection with an alleged case of racial harassment and public humiliation involving a youth from Tripura, following widespread outrage across the Northeast and calls for stringent action against those targeting people from the region.

Police said on Thursday, October 22, that Shokeen was apprehended after investigators tracked his movements across Delhi. He was allegedly hiding at a relativeโ€™s residence in Karol Bagh after changing locations and was traced to Shahdara with the assistance of technical surveillance before being arrested late on Wednesday evening.

The case stems from a video circulated on Instagram that allegedly shows a youth from Tripura being subjected to degrading treatment, harassment and racial mockery by a social media content creator.

Police said a Tripura-based individual identified the account associated with the video as belonging to Shokeen. The allegations are under investigation.

According to Delhi Police, a case has been registered under Sections 192, 196, 352 and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The provisions cover offences including provocation with intent to cause a riot, promoting enmity between groups, intentional insult and making statements conducive to public mischief, subject to the specific facts and legal requirements of each offence.

Police said the investigation into the viral video remains ongoing, and the charges are yet to be proven in court.
