Agartala: The Youth TIPRA Federation (YTF), the youth wing of the Tipra Motha Party, on Wednesday lodged a complaint with the officer-in-charge of NCC Police Station in Agartala, seeking legal action against social media content creator Amir Shokeen over a racially abusive video targeting an indigenous youngster from Tripura.
Addressing the media, Tipra Motha MDC and YTF general secretary Prasmit Debbarma said the content creator had used derogatory language against Tripura and subjected a youth from the state to humiliating treatment in a video circulated on social media.
Debbarma urged Chief Minister Manik Saha and the central government to take action against those involved in racial harassment of people from the Northeast. He also called for coordination with the authorities in Delhi to address discrimination against people from the region in metropolitan cities.
“People from the Northeast are Indians. Why should Tiprasas be called Chinese when they go to Delhi, or Bengalis from Tripura be mistaken for Bangladeshis?” he said, arguing that racial stereotyping undermined the dignity and national identity of citizens from the region.
In its complaint, the YTF identified the accused as Amir Shokeen and cited his Instagram handle, @amirshokeen, along with a link to the alleged offending video. The complaint stated that the reel was uploaded on September 19, 2026.
According to the organisation, the video, reportedly recorded in Delhi, showed Shokeen verbally abusing an indigenous youth from Tripura, allegedly calling him “Chinese” and using a derogatory term for the state.
The YTF also alleged that the creator subjected the youth to inappropriate physical gestures and harassment while presenting the interaction as social media content.
The organisation said such conduct amounted to racial harassment and humiliation of both the individual and the people of Tripura. It argued that identifying indigenous citizens by racial slurs and questioning their national identity was unacceptable.
The complaint urged the police to register an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, 2000.
It also sought coordination with cybercrime authorities and the Delhi Police for an investigation and appropriate legal action.
Debbarma referred to the alleged killing of Angel Chakma in Dehradun while raising concerns over the treatment of people from the Northeast outside the region. He urged the chief minister to take up the issue with the Union government to prevent similar incidents.
The complaint was signed by YTF office-bearers, including its president, Suraj Debbarma, along with other functionaries from district units.
Shokeen, on the other hand, posted an apology video. In the video, he acknowledged his ignorance about Tripura and further asserted that the video was scripted and that the person whom people had been calling a victim of racial discrimination was also part of the script. He also apologised to the people of Tripura for hurting their sentiments.
Apart from the YTF, several senior political leaders also sought action against the influencer. Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, BJP leader Devid Debbarma and several leaders from Tipra Motha demanded strict action against the influencer.
