A labourer engaged in a private construction company was trampled to death by a wild elephant at the Goalpara railway station in lower Assam.

The labourer has been identified as 45-year-old Madan Basumatary.

The incident took place at around 9:30 PM on Tuesday.

Madan was a resident of Baksa district in the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD).

According to sources, the incident occurred when Madan came out of his room for temporary shelter to respond to nature’s call and came face to face with the lone wild elephant which was roaming in the Goalpara railway station area.

“In order to escape, Madan Basumatary tried to climb an under-construction building. However, he was dragged down by the wild elephant and trampled to death,” Dhananjoy Medhi, wildlife warden of Goalpara district, told Northeast Now.

“Actually, the area was earlier under the Rakhyasini reserve forest of Goalpara range forest,” informed Medhi.

“However, for the construction of railway lines the area was handed over to the railway department. But wild elephants still move freely in the area,” added the forest official.

The body of Madan Basumatary was later recovered by the police and sent for conducting post-mortem.

Last month, two children died in elephant attack under the Goalpara forest range.
