The Assam forest department is facing flak after the recovery of a carcass of an elephant in upper Assam.
A highly decomposed carcass of an elephant was found near a rivulet at Lakhipathar reserve forest area of Digboi Forest Division in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district.
The elephant was spotted on the bank of a rivulet by some residents of nearby Bokajan village.
Locals alleged that no forest officials have so far visited the spot and taken any steps to conduct post-mortem of the elephant.
Forest officials have also not buried the elephant carcass and left it to be decomposed on the bank of the rivulet, locals alleged.
Locals said the elephant was injured in poachers attack around one month back
According to locals the elephant sustained serious injury after it was shot by suspected poachers.
Suspected poachers tried to kill the jumbo when it strayed out of the jungle but failed as their target was missed, said a local.
Locals have accused the forest department of neglect and blamed the department for the death of the elephant.
“The forest department is fully responsible for the death of the elephant. Although the injured jumbo was in need of urgent attention, the forest department didn’t administer much-needed treatment to the animal,” alleged a local.
