Guwahati: A wave of protest swept through Guwahati’s Bharalumukh locality on Saturday as a large number of students, environmental activists, and local residents united against the Assam government’s decision to axe over 70 trees for the construction of a flyover.
Demonstrators marched through the streets, carrying placards with slogans like “Save Trees, Save Bharalu” and “Save Trees, Save Earth.”

They urged the government to reconsider its plans, emphasizing that development should not come at the cost of the environment.
“Where there are trees, there is life. Destroying the environment in the name of development is unacceptable,” said a local resident, echoing the sentiments of hundreds gathered.
The protesters emphasized the importance of preserving the Bharalu River and its surrounding greenery.

The protest was attended by over 100 people, including community leaders Khanindra Lal Sharma, Ajit Patwari, Najib Ahmed, Mowsam Hazarika, Gyanshree Pathak, and Pranab Chowdhury.
