Guwahati: Girijananda Chowdhury University (GCU) in Assam successfully hosted the Japan Carnival 2024 on Friday and Saturday, in collaboration with the Japan Foundation, New Delhi.
This unique festival, organized by the Department of English and Foreign Languages, aimed to celebrate the rich tapestry of Japanese culture and strengthen the bonds between India and Japan.

The two-day carnival showcased various aspects of Japanese life, including traditional games, Yukata fashion, movie screenings, and Cosplay. Participants were treated to mini-lessons in the Japanese language, including Hiragana script, numbers, and basic expressions.
An interactive quiz on Japanese history, geography, and culture added to the excitement.
Jasoda Ranjan Das, president of the SSA Society, inaugurated the event, highlighting Japan’s remarkable balance of technological advancement and cultural heritage.

Prof. Kandarpa Das, Vice-Chancellor of GCU, emphasized the university’s commitment to bridging the gap in knowledge about Japan and its plans to introduce BA and MA courses in Japanese language.
The event was graced by the presence of Takashi Kobayashi from the Embassy of Japan and Koji Sato, Director General of the Japan Foundation.
Both dignitaries praised GCU’s efforts in promoting Japanese language and culture. Kobayashi also provided valuable information about scholarship and exchange programs available for Indian students, including the JET Program and MEXT scholarships.
The Japan Carnival 2024 was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impression on the attendees and fostering a deeper appreciation for Japanese culture.
