Guwahati: Kiran Rao’s directorial venture, Laapataa Ladies, has been selected as India’s official entry for the 98th Academy Awards. The film beat out several notable contenders, including Animal, Chandu Champion, Kalki 2898 AD, and Sam Bahadur.
Co-produced by Aamir Khan, Laapataa Ladies garnered critical acclaim for its unique narrative. The film follows the journey of two newlywed brides who find themselves switched after a train mishap. The ensemble cast features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Ravi Kishan.

Rao, who had previously expressed her desire for the film to be India’s Oscar entry, expressed her delight at the selection. “This is a dream come true,” she said in a statement. “I’m incredibly grateful to the jury for recognizing the film’s potential and for giving it this opportunity.”
The film, set in rural India in 2001, explores themes of identity, mistaken identity, and the challenges faced by women in a patriarchal society.
