Guwahati: Gorillaz will perform in Guwahati on January 31, 2027, adding Assam to the itinerary for the virtual bandโs first India tour.
The venue, also known as the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, will host the third show of the India tour after performances scheduled in Bengaluru and Mumbai.
District, the producer and exclusive ticketing partner for The Mountain Tour, announced the Guwahati date in association with Assam Tourism.
The addition of Guwahati gives the India tour a direct connection with The Mountain, Gorillazโs ninth studio album. India has influenced the album through both its musical collaborations and inspirations, with the tour now bringing the albumโs India-related journey to the Northeast.
Among the Indian musicians associated with the album are sarod players Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash, sons of renowned sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan. Their contributions form part of the Indian musical influences featured in The Mountain.
Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett created Gorillaz, whose animated members 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel Hobbs form a central part of the bandโs identity. The India tour will present this concept in a live setting for audiences in the country for the first time.
For the live performances, Albarn will take the stage with the Gorillaz live band along with guest performers. The Guwahati concert will therefore bring the bandโs live production to audiences in the Northeast as part of its debut India tour.
Albarn and Hewlett said their first performances in India would be an opportunity to return to a country that influenced the making of The Mountain. They also spoke about the musicians they met and worked with during their time in India and said they were looking forward to performing in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Guwahati.
Assam Tourism Development Corporation Managing Director Kumar Padmapani Bora said the state was pleased to host Gorillaz as part of the bandโs India debut. He said the concert could add to the regionโs cultural activities and create opportunities for tourism, local businesses and the wider economy, while fans from different parts of the country would be able to visit Assam for the event.
District CEO Rahul Ganjoo said bringing the tour to Guwahati was part of the companyโs effort to present international live entertainment in India.
He also said the Northeast has a strong music community and that the company was looking forward to the bandโs first live performance in the region.
With Guwahati now included, Gorillaz will perform in the Northeast during the India leg of The Mountain Tour. The city joins Bengaluru and Mumbai as the three announced venues for the 2027 tour.
The tour will begin in Bengaluru on January 23 at District Arena, Terraform. The second concert is scheduled for January 27 at Jio World Garden in BKC, Mumbai, followed by the Guwahati show on January 31 at the Sarusajai Sports Complex, Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium.
