Assam satellite townships
According to the Chief Minister, the authority will develop new urban centres around Guwahati, focusing on housing, industry, logistics and future-ready infrastructure.

Guwahati: The Assam government has unveiled a new urban development strategy aimed at easing pressure on Guwahati by creating a series of planned townships around the city, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma saying the initiative will guide the capital’s next phase of growth.

The proposal will be implemented through the newly formed Guwahati Satellite City Development Authority, which has been tasked with preparing plans, arranging finances and steering the development of the satellite townships.

According to the Chief Minister, the authority will work on establishing new urban centres in the Guwahati region, with emphasis on residential development, industrial corridors, logistics facilities and infrastructure designed to meet future requirements.

In a post on X, Sarma said the satellite townships are intended to accommodate the city’s expanding population and rising economic activity while reducing congestion in the state capital and improving living conditions.

A presentation released by the government said the project seeks to create new opportunities for housing, industry and logistics through planned urban expansion.

It added that infrastructure development and suitable financing models will be incorporated to support long-term growth.

The initiative comes as Guwahati continues to experience rapid expansion, with increasing traffic, population growth and rising housing demand placing additional pressure on civic services over the past several years.

To cope with these challenges, the state has already invested in major infrastructure works, including flyovers, wider roads, riverfront projects and improved connectivity with adjoining areas.

Officials said the proposed satellite townships are expected to open up fresh areas for industrial and commercial activity, easing the development pressure currently concentrated in Guwahati while attracting investment to nearby locations.

The Guwahati Satellite City Development Authority will be responsible for drawing up the roadmap for the project and working with different government agencies to carry out the planned expansion.

According to the government, the long-term objective is to support more even urban growth across the region while further strengthening Guwahati’s importance as the Northeast’s principal business hub.
