Guwahati: The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) has shown a remarkable improvement by securing the 344th position globally in the ‘QS World University Rankings 2025.’
With an overall score of 32.9, the premier institute has achieved a remarkable advancement of 20 places in this year’s rankings.

Based on the QS World University Rankings 2025 released on Tuesday, June 4, it highlights that since 2014, the IIT-Guwahati has ascended its rank by a remarkable 257 places, from the 601-650 range to the 344th position in 2024.
As per the rankings of IITG, the research citations per faculty stands out as the strongest indicator at rank 42 globally, followed by employer reputation at 295 and academic reputation at 480.
Since 2004, the QS World University Rankings have been a significant benchmark in assessing institutions worldwide.

The rankings consider various parameters, including academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio, international student ratio, employment outcome, international research network and sustainability.
For the 2025 edition, a total of 5,663 institutions were evaluated worldwide, resulting in the ranking of 1,503 institutions. In India, 46 institutions have been ranked this year.
The IIT-Guwahati’s significant presence in 18 different subject category rankings highlights the institute’s multidisciplinary focus and diversity.
Director of IITG, Prof Devendra Jalihal, while expressing delight over the institute’s performance said, “This year-on-year improvement in IITG’s global ranking is a testament to the relentless dedication and hard work of our faculty, students and staff. Our commitment to excel in education, research and innovation continues to drive us forward.”
“We are proud of this achievement and remain focused on further enhancing our global standing and contributing to the advancement of knowledge and technology. The numerous challenges faced for internationalisation of institutes across India needs to be immediately addressed for further enhancement of world ranking,” he added.
Established in 1994, the IIT-Guwahati completed 25 years of existence in 2019.
At present, the institute has eleven departments, nine interdisciplinary academic centres and five schools covering all the major engineering, science, healthcare, management, and humanities disciplines, offering BTech, BDes, BSc (Hons), MA, MDes, MTech, MSc, MS (R), MBA and PhD programmes.
The institute offers a residential campus to 439 faculty members and more than 8,600 students at present.
The IITG has retained its seventh position among the best engineering institutions of the country and ninth position in both ‘Overall’ and ‘Research’ categories in the ‘India Rankings 2023’ declared by the Union Education Ministry’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
Among other frontier areas of research and innovation, IIT-Guwahati is working towards augmenting critical science research initiatives in genomics, developmental biology, health care and bioinformatics, and flexible electronics, among numerous other areas.
