Elections to the students’ body of Cotton University (in Guwahati, Assam) which was held on Friday was marred by violence in which two students of the varsity – Trinayan Baruah and Nabajit Dutta who contested for the post of General Secretary – were attacked by unidentified miscreants just one day prior to the Cotton University Students’ Union elections. The duo was taken to Gauhati Medical College (GMC) for treatment.
People across the State as well as students have condemned the “cowardly act” of violence against these two students. Meanwhile, candidates of Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti, the student wing of Akhil Gogoi’s Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) has won the most coveted posts in the Cotton University Students’ Union elections. Brojen Phukan, who is a third semester student – is the new president of the student’s body while Pranjal Kalita is the new general secretary. Madhusmita Das of fifth semester is the new assistant general secretary. The results were announced on Saturday night.
Pranjal, who is a boarder of CM hostel of the varsity, defeated Amlan Jyoti Kalita of 3rd semester, Bituprative Boruah of 5th semester and Priyanka Nayak of 3rd semester. Ditul Kalita and Hirakjyoti Bora of 1st semester and Nabajit Kalita of 5th semester had to bite dust before Pranjal Kalita from Mahendra Nath Deka Phukan hostel.
