Tinsukia: As Assam moves closer to the elections, details of candidates’ educational qualifications across six constituencies in Tinsukia have triggered widespread public discussion, with 28 candidates contesting and presenting diverse academic backgrounds.
With the nomination process completed, electoral authorities have efficiently carried out all necessary procedures for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
Candidates contesting from Tinsukia, Doomdooma, Sadiya, Margherita, Digboi, and the newly formed Makum constituencies have officially submitted their nomination papers, including disclosures of their educational qualifications.
According to data submitted to the Election Commission, the 28 candidates reflect a wide spectrum of academic achievement. Among them, two candidates hold postgraduate degrees, eight are graduates, and two possess professional qualifications.
Additionally, seven candidates have studied up to the higher secondary level, while six have passed matriculation. Notably, three candidates have educational qualifications ranging between Class VI and Class IX, reflecting the diversity in educational backgrounds among political aspirants.
In Sadiya constituency, Asom Jatiya Parishad candidate Jagadish Bhuyan holds a postgraduate degree, whereas BJP candidate Bolin Chetia has a higher secondary qualification. Similarly, in Margherita, Raijor Dal candidate Rahul Chetry is a postgraduate, while BJP’s Bhaskar Sharma is educated up to the higher secondary level.
The Doomdooma constituency sees both BJP candidate Rupesh Gowala and Congress candidate Durga Bhumij listed as graduates. In Tinsukia, Congress candidate David Phukan holds a law degree.
In Digboi, JMM candidate Bharat Nayak possesses an MBA degree, while BJP’s Suren Phukan is a matriculate, and Raijor Dal’s Dulal Moran has a higher secondary qualification.
Meanwhile, in the newly formed Makum constituency, Congress candidate Shibnath Chetia has a higher secondary qualification, whereas BJP candidate and former Labour Minister Sanjay Kishan is a matriculate.
The educational profiles of candidates have drawn attention, with voters discussing their potential impact on governance and electoral choices.
As campaigning intensifies, this discussion is expected to shape public perception in the run-up to polling day.
The state assembly election will be held on April 9 in a single phase, while counting will take place on May 4.
