Guwahati: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) president Badruddin Ajmal on Friday said AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi is set to visit Assam in early April, in a move aimed at boosting the partyโs campaign ahead of the Assembly elections.
Ajmal said the visit was finalised following a meeting in Delhi between his son, Abdul Rahman Ajmal, and Owaisi. โToday my son Abdul Rahman Ajmal formally went to have dinner with them. They had a word, then they spoke to me and then they agreed upon visiting Assam,โ he said, adding that the parties plan to โorganise at least eight programmesโ during the visit.
Owaisi had earlier confirmed his partyโs support for the AIUDF, saying the decision followed a request from the AIUDF chief. He noted that Abdul Rahman Ajmal had met him at his residence in Delhi and that he had also spoken to the AIUDF chief over the phone.
According to party sources, Owaisi is expected to visit Guwahati for two days and address several public meetings in support of AIUDF candidates. The visit is being viewed as part of efforts to consolidate minority votes in key constituencies.
The development comes amid AIMIMโs broader outreach in eastern India. The party has recently extended support to Humayun Kabir and his Aam Janata Unnayan Party in West Bengal. Owaisi said the initiative is aimed at strengthening minority leadership in the region. โOur attempt is that a leadership from the Muslim minority emerges and strengthen. This alliance is not limited to just this election,โ he said.
Political observers say AIMIMโs engagements in Assam and West Bengal signal a push to expand its presence in the region, potentially impacting electoral dynamics in constituencies with significant minority populations.
Assam will go to the polls in a single phase on April 9 for its 126-member Assembly, while West Bengal will vote in two phases on April 23 and April 29. Counting of votes for both states is scheduled for May 4.
