Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday reviewed the status of the work to build five hundred playgrounds in Assam.
Chief minister Sonowal reviewed the functioning of Assam Youth Development Mission Society under Mega Mission Chief Minister’s Samagra Gramya Unnayan Yojna (CMSGUY).
The review meeting was held in the office conference room of the Assam CM at the Janata Bhawan in Guwahati on Monday evening.
Chief minister Sonowal said competitive spirit must be inculcated among the sports talents at rural areas to excel in their chosen fields.
Sonowal exhorted the sports department officials to create awareness about sports at the grassroots and encourage the youth to take up sports as a way of life while making the playground development scheme as ambitious as Prime Minister’s Khelo India programme.
He also urged for inviting sports experts, noted former players from various parts of the country and the world to gain ideas to develop sports sector of the state.
The chief minister also emphasised the need to focus on the sports disciplines where there was medal winning scope in events such as National Games, Asian and Olympic Games.

The Assam CM directed the district sports officers to visit the villages to identify and nurture sports talents and also to find out requirement of playgrounds.
Awareness generation about different sports disciplines in the grassroots was of paramount importance to make Guwahati the sports capital of India, he said.
