A wild elephant which had strayed out from its herd entered Guwabari village along the Indo-Bhutan border in Baksa district of Assam.
The terrified villagers left their houses and took refuge in secured places as the elephant created havoc.
The wild tusker went on a rampage and broke houses of two families and uprooted several betel nut and coconut trees.

One villager Fijo Moshahary was seriously injured and was immediately taken to the hospital.
Though the villagers tried to chase the wild pachyderm away showing torch flames but to no avail.
At the break of dawn, the elephant left the village towards the hillside. Wild elephants are creating havoc for years together along the Indo-Bhutan border under Nagrijuli development block in Baksa district
The villagers are spending sleepless nights year after year. With the population soaring by the day, people are encroaching elephant habitats as a result of which herds of wild elephants often come out of the jungles to the villages in search of food. This has resulted in growing man-elephant tussle.
Will the authorities concerned finally wake up and take notice? It is high time that the Forest Department authorities evict people who are settling in elephant habitats before things take turn for the worse.
