Giving a massive blow to the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I), seven hardcore cadres of the militant outfit surrendered before security forces on Monday night along with a huge cache of arms and ammunition.
According to information, the cadres surrendered before the security forces following a joint operation carried out by Assam police and Army on the basis of inputs provided by military intelligence.
As per media reports, the surrendered cadres have been identified as ‘sergeant’ Barun Asom, ‘lance corporal’ Saurabh Asom, ‘lance corporal’ Uttam Asom, ‘lance corporal’ Basanta Asom, ‘lance corporal’ Ninja Asom, Mazid Moran and Shekharjyoti Asom.
The cache of arms and ammunition handed over to the security forces include 3 AK-81(MQ) Assault Rifle (Regd. No RA-80548, RA 80412 & KO10-009A); 1 AK 56 Assault Rifle (Regd. No 563930253); 2 Heckler & Koch (HK) Assault Rifle (Regd. No NA); 6 AK 81 Magazine; 5 AK 56 Magazine; 6 HK Magazine; 1 Chinese hand grenade; 326 numbers of 7.62 mm ammunition; 232 numbers of 5.56 mm ammunition and 59 numbers of 9 mm ammunition.
According to media reports, the ULFA-I cadres surrendered in presence of Tinsukia superintendent of police Shiladitya Chetia.

It has been reported that the surrender of the ULFA-I cadres is the result of Myanmar army’s crackdown on the insurgent groups from the northeastern region including United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I).
Media reports say that the cadres of the banned militant outfit of Assam had crossed the Indo-Myanmar border last Saturday but landed in Indian security forces’ trap in Tinsukia on Monday night.
It has been reported that the Army and Assam police launched a joint operation on the basis of inputs received from military intelligence on Saturday.
The ULFA (I) also reportedly confirmed the death of its senior leader ‘major’ Jyotirmoy Asom during the recent anti-insurgency operation carried out by Myanmar army in Taga region.
According to reports, the body of Jyotirmoy Asom was recovered from somewhere in Taga region of Myanmar, where the ULFA-I had its camp.
The Myanmar army carried out offensive to flush out Northeast rebel groups including NSCN-K, ULFA-I, NDFB-S and KLO — which have bases in the territory of Myanmar.
Army sources claimed, on February 2, gun-battle had taken place in between ULFA-I and Myanmar Army where one of the ULFA-I cadres was killed and another one was nabbed by the Tatmadaw, the official name of the armed forces of Myanmar.
