Agnes Kharshiing

An investigation officer recorded the statement of social activist Agnes Kharshiing here on Thursday in connection with the attcak on her by suspected coal mafia.

Agnes and her aide Amita Sangma was brutally attacked allegedly by a group of coal mafia at Sohshrieh in East Jaiñtia Hills district on November 8 after taking pictures of coal-laden trucks which transported coal despite the ban by the NGT.

The Deputy SP of East Jaiñtia Hills district, Gilbert Marshillong who is also the investigation officer arrived at Agnes’s present place of stay at Nongshiliang in Shillong at 11 am to record her statement.

Agnes is staying in the house of her brother Francis Kharshiing.

“She is recovering slowly, and the plaster of her right arm which had a fracture has been removed. Rib fractures are improving and is now undergoing slow physiotherapy to enable her to be functional to sit and to try to move few steps at a time,” family sources said.

Agnes was discharged from North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) on December 10 and Amita was discharged on November 30.
