Gauhati University(GU) sent a 14- member team to Sherubtse College of Royal University of Bhutan from October  5-7 as a part of international cultural exchange programme.

The purpose of this visit is to commemorate the 50- year strong friendship between India and Bhutan.

The GU team, led by Dr. Ranjan Kr Kakati, Director, Students’ Welfare, was given a warm welcome in the Bhutan institute by its President.

The GU team members were Dr. Ranjan Kakati, Dr. Jayashree Devi,  Nipamoni Deka, Hirakjyoti Sarma, Madhusmita Mahanta, Swarika Singha, Jayashree Sarma, Biswashi Mahanta, Biplob Gogoi, Anurag K Borgohain, Himangshu Rajbongshi, Arup Jyoti Kalita, Champak Bordoloi and Jitumoni Das.

Dr. Kakati said that India and Bhutan have many cultural diversities and similarities. Citing an example of cultural similarity, he said that the mask dance of Bhutan is quite similar to the Mukha Bhaona, the mask dance of Assam and many other mask dances of India.

The President of Sherubtse College, Royal University of Bhutan said that India and Bhutan can strengthen their bond of friendship further by academic cultural exchange programmes, reports The Assam Tribune.

At the programme, Dr Jayashree Devi, Dept of Performing Arts, GU, performed Gurubandana. The team members also performed various folk art forms of Assam like Sattriya dance, Bihu dance, folk orchestra, tokari geet and Assamese patriotic songs.
