Dimapur: Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton on Saturday expressed concern over the growing number of underground factions and the increasing incidence of extortion in the state, urging Naga political groups to set aside their differences and work towards unity.
He said the Government of India would offer only one solution to the Naga political issue, rather than separate solutions for the 36โ37 factions operating in the state.
Patton pointed out that Nagaland has the highest number of underground factions in the country and faces a high incidence of extortion, particularly in Dimapur, Chumoukedima and Niuland districts.
He made these remarks while addressing the Tokhu Emong celebration organised by the Dimapur Lotha Hoho at the Multi Disciplinary Sports Complex in Dimapur.
Tokhu Emong, the premier festival of the Lotha Naga tribe, is celebrated to express gratitude to God for a bountiful harvest and the blessings received throughout the year.
Calling for greater unity among Naga political groups, Patton appealed to the factions to coordinate their efforts and work collectively towards resolving the Naga issue. He said the Naga public had also been urging the groups to come together and pursue a common path.
He also called upon the Lotha Naga community to develop a better understanding of the Naga political movement and contribute towards securing an acceptable solution for all sections of Naga society.
โWe should not encourage disunity and should not be a part of dividing our Naga society,โ he said.
Extending Tokhu Emong greetings to the Lotha community in and around Dimapur and across the country, Patton expressed hope that the festival would strengthen brotherhood, peace, mutual understanding and unity while bringing prosperity to Naga society.
