Imphal: Eighty-four Border Security Force (BSF) personnel were hospitalised at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Manipur’s Imphal on Thursday following a suspected mass food poisoning incident.

Hospital authorities confirmed that the personnel, belonging to the D/58 Battalion, were admitted around noon after experiencing severe nausea and vomiting.

The troops had arrived in Manipur from Chhattisgarh the previous day and fell ill shortly after eating puri and sabji for breakfast at their camp under the jurisdiction of Lamsang Police Station.

RIMS Superintendent-in-Charge Moirangthem Rameswar Singh said the hospital provided immediate medical care and symptomatic treatment to all the personnel.

He confirmed that all patients were in stable condition and out of danger. Officials later said only five personnel would remain hospitalised for further treatment, while the rest were expected to be discharged by Thursday evening.

Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam visited the hospital to review the situation.

He assured the personnel that the state government was ready to provide all necessary assistance during their recovery.

Medical officials said the exact cause of the suspected food poisoning had not yet been established and an investigation was underway.
