Imphal: In a move to promote grassroots development and institutional reform, the Manipur State Cabinet on August 28 approved a women’s empowerment scheme along with a dedicated police recruitment drive for athletes.
The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at the Cabinet Hall of the Chief Minister’s Office on Friday.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen through video conference, Deputy Chief Minister Loshii Dikho, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, other Cabinet ministers, Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel and senior departmental officials.
The Cabinet approved the “Women Empowerment Manipur Scheme”, which aims to provide financial support to more than 3.5 lakh women across the state. Under the scheme, beneficiaries will receive a direct financial grant of Rs 10,000 each during the first year. Registered Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) will also be eligible for interest-free bank loans, with the interest waiver available for a period of two to three years.
The Cabinet also gave in-principle approval to the “Manipur Police Special Recruitment Scheme for Meritorious Sportspersons 2026”. The scheme will provide employment opportunities in the police force for athletes from the state who have performed well at competitive levels.
The government also finalised its legislative plans ahead of the upcoming State Assembly session, which is scheduled to begin on September 2, 2026.
The Cabinet approved three bills for introduction in the Assembly: the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2026; the Manipur Town and Country Planning (Sixth Amendment) Bill, 1975; and the Indian Stamp (Manipur Amendment) Bill, 2026.
The Cabinet said the measures were aimed at addressing revenue, urban planning and socio-economic support ahead of the upcoming Assembly session.
