Aizawl: Doctors at the state-run Zoram Medical College and Hospital (ZMC&H) have performed Mizoram’s first open-heart surgery at the state’s lone medical college, hospital officials said on Thursday.
A team led by resident cardiothoracic surgeon Mary Hmingthantluangi and Intekhab Alam from Apollo Excel Hospital in Guwahati performed coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) on a 69-year-old patient with triple-vessel disease.
The patient had suffered a heart attack about six months ago and was subsequently diagnosed with triple-vessel disease, a severe form of coronary artery disease involving blockages in three major coronary arteries.
The six-and-a-half-hour procedure involved temporarily stopping the patient’s heart and using a heart-lung machine to maintain vital functions, officials said.
The surgical team used a saphenous vein from the patient’s leg and the left internal mammary artery (LIMA) from the chest to create bypasses around the blocked coronary arteries before restoring normal cardiac activity.
“The operation was successful and the patient is currently under close observation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU),” a medical officer at ZMC&H said.
The surgery was supported by a team of anaesthesiologists, cardiologists and specialised nursing staff. Cardiologist Lal?hafala also monitored the patient throughout the procedure.
Mizoram Health Minister Lalrinpuii expressed gratitude to the surgical, anaesthesiology and cardiology teams, operating theatre nurses and other staff involved in the procedure.
