Guwahati: A tailor was detained in Assam’s Morigaon district after a Facebook account carrying his name allegedly posted a death threat against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a live interaction on the social media platform, police said.
The man, identified as Abdul Mutaleb, was detained by Bhuragaon Police after the alleged threat appeared while Sarma was conducting a Facebook Live session.
Mutaleb, however, has denied any involvement in the post. He claimed that someone had created a fake Facebook account using his photograph and was attempting to implicate him.
“This is completely fake. I request the police to probe the matter. Someone has used my photo and created a fake Facebook account to make me the accused. I am just a tailor,” Mutaleb said before heading to the police station.
Police are questioning Mutaleb to determine whether he operated the account from which the alleged threat was posted. Investigators are also examining the account’s activity and digital trail to establish its authenticity and identify the person responsible for the post.
The alleged threat surfaced during the Chief Minister’s Facebook Live session, prompting the police to act against the suspected account holder.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the misuse of social media, particularly the creation of fake profiles to issue threats or falsely implicate individuals.
Further action is likely after investigators establish the origin of the account and verify who was behind the alleged post.
