Guwahati: Assam’s flood situation remained grim on Wednesday, with the death toll rising to 78 after three more fatalities were reported from Sivasagar and Golaghat districts. More than three lakh people continue to be affected by the floods across seven districts, according to the latest official bulletin.
The report stated that 3,00,031 people are reeling under the impact of the floods in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Biswanath and Kamrup Metropolitan districts. In all, 551 villages under 21 revenue circles remain inundated, while standing crops covering 21,523.08 hectares have been damaged.
The latest casualties include two people from Sivasagar and one from Golaghat, taking the state’s cumulative flood-related death toll to 78.
In Kamrup Metropolitan district, urban flooding continues to affect several areas, with waterlogging persisting in three revenue circles. Localities facing inundation include Padumbari, Boragaon, the Excelcare Hospital area, Lachit Nagar, Zoo Road, Rukminigaon, Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Satgaon, Beharbari, Hatigaon, Wireless, Jorabat and Kamarkuchi near Zubeen Khetra.
Officials, however, have not reported any population as affected by the urban flooding.
Even as water levels have receded in several flood-hit areas, the recovery process remains slow. Damaged houses, thick deposits of mud and silt, broken road links and large-scale crop losses continue to hinder relief and rehabilitation efforts, leaving many affected families struggling to rebuild their lives.
