Dibrugarh: Severe cracks have developed in houses and roads at Jharna Basti in Ledo, under Margherita Co-district in Assam’s Tinsukia district, leaving around 100 families affected and raising concerns over their safety.

According to local residents, the cracks have been widening, with several families already relocated to safer locations amid fears that the situation could worsen.

Residents have alleged that coal dumping in the area may be responsible for the damage.

Taking note of the situation, Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma on Friday visited the affected area along with officials from the co-district administration and representatives of North Eastern Coalfields to assess the situation.

During the inspection, Sharma said the matter would be taken up seriously and assured residents that arrangements would soon be made to send geological experts to the area for a scientific assessment of the ground cracks.

The proposed assessment is expected to help determine the cause and extent of the damage and establish whether the affected area faces further ground instability.

Meanwhile, concerns remain among residents as cracks continue to affect homes and roads, with families awaiting a detailed investigation and necessary measures to ensure their safety.
