Guwahati: The Karbi Anglong District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has announced the closure of all waterfall picnic destinations across the district until further notice due to the ongoing flood situation and concerns over public safety.
The directive, issued by District Commissioner and DDMA Chairperson Aranyak Saikia, said the precautionary measure was necessary in view of the worsening weather conditions and the risk of accidents in vulnerable areas.
According to the order, access to all waterfall picnic spots has been restricted with immediate effect to prevent possible loss of lives and damage to property during the current situation.
The decision comes as several parts of Assam continue to face flood-related challenges following days of heavy rainfall.
Meanwhile, flash floods have severely affected parts of Jorhat and Kakojan, where several areas have been submerged. A portion of National Highway 715 has also gone underwater, disrupting vehicular movement and impacting connectivity.
Rescue teams have been deployed in the affected regions to assist stranded residents. Jorhat Fire Station In-charge Pranab Bora said teams equipped with boats are carrying out operations across the district.
“Rescue operations are continuing throughout Jorhat. We have eight boats deployed in different areas. The teams have been working since yesterday. Though the weather conditions remain difficult, water levels have shown some decline, and we expect further improvement if the situation remains stable,” Bora said.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday stated that the state administration has stepped up relief and rescue measures as floods affected over 1.7 lakh people in 12 districts.
In a post on X, Sarma urged MPs and MLAs from the affected areas to stay present on the ground and coordinate with authorities to monitor the situation.
“I have asked all MPs and MLAs of the flood-affected districts to remain on the ground and closely monitor developments. I am continuously coordinating with public representatives and have assured every possible support from the Assam government. With rainfall continuing and water levels increasing, efforts are being strengthened to move people to safer locations and provide essential assistance,” he said.
Authorities have advised people to stay away from rivers, waterfalls and other water bodies until weather conditions improve and the flood situation stabilises.
