Imphal: Continuous heavy rainfall over the past two days has triggered widespread flash floods and landslides across Manipur, with the situation worsening after a 10-foot breach developed in the Nambol River embankment at Kongkham Mamang Leikai in Bishnupur district on Monday afternoon.
The embankment gave way at around 2 pm, allowing floodwaters to inundate large areas of agricultural land, residential localities and fish ponds. Residents also reported that fish from several ponds were washed away by the strong currents.
According to the State Water Resources Department, the Nambol and Nambul rivers are flowing well above the warning level following continuous rainfall. Several low-lying areas of Imphal, particularly along Tiddim Road, have been severely waterlogged, while landslides triggered by the rain have disrupted parts of Tamenglong and Noney districts.
Authorities have launched emergency efforts to repair the breached embankment. Personnel from the Bishnupur district administration, the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Nambol, Nambol Police, the Indian Red Cross Society’s Bishnupur district branch, and local residents have been working together to contain the damage. However, the breach had not been sealed when this report was filed.
The flood situation is expected to remain serious over the next few days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several northeastern states, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. While Assam, Tripura, Mizoram and Nagaland are also likely to experience severe weather, Manipur is expected to continue receiving intense monsoon rainfall until July 26, raising concerns of further flooding and landslides.
