Imphal: A hand grenade accompanied by a note reading “Last Warning” was found planted at the entrance gate of a special contractor’s residence in Kongpal Kongkham Leikai under Imphal East district, police said.

The explosive device was discovered at the residence of a contractor identified as John, located near Pong Lambi, prompting immediate concern among local residents. Acting on a WhatsApp alert about the suspected threat, a team from the Manipur Police Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) rushed to the spot.

Bomb disposal experts successfully detected and neutralized the grenade without causing any casualties or damage.

The incident triggered strong reactions from the local community. On Tuesday evening, residents, led largely by Meira Paibi women and supported by several voluntary organisations, staged a sit-in protest at the local market shed.

The demonstration was jointly organised by the Kongpal Kongkham Leikai Welfare Association, Nupi Lup, and the Amateur Athletic Association (AAA). Protesters carried placards condemning the planting of explosives in residential and densely populated areas, expressing concern over the growing threat to public safety.

Speaking at the protest, A. Radhamani of the Welfare Association Nupi Lup said such acts of intimidation create fear and insecurity among residents. She stressed that disputes should be resolved through dialogue rather than violence or threats.

“Had the grenade exploded, innocent lives could have been lost. Who would have taken responsibility?” she questioned, urging those responsible to disclose their motive.

Residents have appealed to the authorities to strengthen security measures in the area and ensure the safety of the public. No individual or organisation has claimed responsibility for the incident so far. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
