Imphal: Former Manipur Police officer Thounaojam Brinda on Sunday announced her candidature from the Yaiskul Assembly constituency for the 2027 Assembly elections, formally entering the electoral fray ahead of the polls due early next year.

Brinda made the announcement at her residence in the presence of supporters and local residents. However, she did not disclose the political party under whose banner she would contest. Sources indicated that her political affiliation would be announced shortly.

Seeking public support for her electoral bid, Brinda said she would work to address issues affecting the constituency.

Brinda had contested the 2022 Assembly elections from Yaiskul but lost to Thokchom Satyabrata, who currently serves as Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.

Before entering electoral politics, Brinda served in the Manipur Police and gained prominence for her role in anti-drug operations. In 2018, she was awarded the Police Medal for Gallantry by the then Chief Minister N. Biren Singh for busting a major drug network that led to the arrest of several high-profile individuals. She later returned the medal following the acquittal of the main accused in the case.
