Guwahati: Kuki organisations and residents from several parts of Manipur took to the streets on June 19, pressing for government action on issues affecting the Kuki-Zo community.
The largest gathering was held in Kangpokpi, where demonstrators later submitted a memorandum for Prime Minister Narendra Modi through district authorities.
The rally began at Nute Kailhang and proceeded along National Highway-2 to the office of the Deputy Commissioner as part of Kuki Inpi Manipur’s statewide campaign for justice.
The event in Kangpokpi was coordinated by the Committee on Tribal Unity, Sadar Hills.
In the memorandum, the organisation drew attention to what it described as continuing security concerns in parts of the state.
It alleged that members of the Kuki-Zo community had been killed in recent incidents and claimed that several villages had suffered damage during the ongoing unrest.
The submission also highlighted concerns about relations between Kuki-Zo and Naga groups, urging authorities to take steps that would improve confidence among communities and strengthen civilian safety in sensitive areas.
Among the demands submitted to the Centre was a request for a judicial investigation into the death of a Kolchung village resident during a security operation conducted in Henglep subdivision on June 16.
The organisation further sought thorough inquiries into incidents involving civilian casualties and destruction of property, increased protection in vulnerable locations and greater public disclosure regarding the progress of investigations.
Other demands included reviewing ceasefire arrangements with armed groups, extending relief and rehabilitation support to affected households and pursuing a political settlement to address the aspirations of the Kuki-Zo people.
Speaking to the media, community representatives said the demonstration was aimed at drawing national attention to issues faced by the Kuki-Zo population. They urged both the state and central governments to prioritise civilian security, uphold peace and ensure stability across the region.
Through the memorandum, the organisation appealed to the Centre to examine the issues raised and take measures that could help ease tensions and encourage peaceful coexistence among Manipur’s communities.
