Dibrugarh: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday chaired a high-level review meeting to discuss long-term measures to ease traffic congestion in Dibrugarh and improve the city’s urban infrastructure.
Sharing details of the meeting on X, Sonowal said officials deliberated on permanent solutions to the city’s growing traffic problems and explored strategies for planned infrastructure development.
“Attended a crucial review meeting to discuss permanent solutions for Dibrugarh‘s traffic congestion and strategies for the city’s overall infrastructural development. Shared key suggestions in the presence of the Deputy Commissioner, Divisional Railway Manager of NFR’s Tinsukia Division, Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Commissioner of the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation,” he said.
Sonowal said one of the key issues discussed was the early construction of a modern parking facility on railway land to reduce traffic congestion in the city.
“A major focus of today’s discussion was accelerating construction of a modern parking facility on railway land to ease city congestion. Our top priority is rapid implementation of initiatives that ensure better urban planning, seamless traffic management and maximum convenience for the people of Dibrugarh,” he added.
Traffic congestion and inadequate parking have remained persistent civic challenges in Dibrugarh for several years. With a steady rise in the number of vehicles, many of the city’s roads regularly witness heavy traffic, particularly during peak hours.
One of the worst-affected stretches is H.S. Road, a busy commercial area where roadside parking frequently narrows the carriageway and causes traffic bottlenecks. Despite repeated concerns raised by residents and extensive media coverage over the years, commuters say the issue remains largely unresolved, with no lasting solution implemented by the district administration or the concerned authorities.
The proposed parking facility and other urban infrastructure initiatives are expected to play a key role in improving traffic flow and addressing the city’s long-standing parking problems.
