Guwahati: The Assam Crime Branch has issued a summons to Congress MP and senior leader Randeep Singh Surjewala, directing him to appear before investigators in Guwahati on Saturday, May 23, in connection with an ongoing probe into a passport-related controversy involving Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The investigation stems from allegations made by Congress leaders, including party spokesperson Pawan Khera, who had raised questions over alleged irregularities linked to Riniki Bhuyan Sarmaโ€™s passport records and citizenship status. These remarks led to the registration of criminal complaints against Khera at the Guwahati Crime Branch under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The summons to Surjewala follows statements reportedly made by Khera during an extensive interrogation lasting nearly eight hours earlier this month. The probe has since expanded after Kheraโ€™s questioning, with authorities continuing to examine related claims and statements.

Khera has challenged an April 24 order of the Gauhati High Court, which denied him anticipatory bail in the case. After appearing before investigators earlier, he refrained from commenting on the specifics of the investigation but reiterated that the Congress party would persist with its political opposition to the BJP-led government in Assam.
