Guwahati: In a collaborative effort to strengthen French language education across the Northeast, the Department of Foreign Languages at Gauhati University co-organised a professional development workshop titled โ€œDynamiser sa classe de FLEโ€ on Wednesday.

The workshop was organised in collaboration with Institut Franรงais en Inde (FI), the cultural and educational wing of the French Embassy in India, and the Indian Association of Teachers of French (IATF).

The workshop aimed to equip French language teachers with innovative pedagogical methods, digital resources, and contemporary approaches to language instruction.

Gauhati University Vice Chancellor Nani Gopal Mahanta inaugurated the workshop, with Julia Martin, Attachรฉe de coopรฉration pour le franรงais at the Consulate of France in Kolkata, attending as the chief guest. Gulab Jha, Head of the Department of Foreign Languages, delivered the welcome address.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Mahanta underscored the growing significance of multilingualism in todayโ€™s interconnected world and the increasingly vital role languages play in shaping global engagement.

Julia Martin spoke about the active role played by Institut Franรงais en Inde in promoting French language and culture across India and commended the department for its sustained contribution to French language education in the region.

Rounak Mahtab, President (East Zone) of the Indian Association of Teachers of French, spoke about the associationโ€™s efforts to build and sustain a vibrant professional community among French language educators across the country.

A highlight of the occasion was the release of Path, an Assamese rendering of La Leรงon, the celebrated absurdist play by Eugรจne Ionesco, translated from the original French by Rounak Mahtab and Seshadri Goswami.

The publication marks a meaningful step towards introducing the Western absurdist theatrical tradition to Assamese readers.

The workshop drew participation from French language teachers representing institutions across the Northeast, providing a platform for academic exchange and professional development in the field of foreign language education.
