Guwahati: Madhushree Das, professor of geography at Gauhati University and former head of department and dean of science, has been conferred Fellowship of the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers).

The recognition is for contributions to geography through research and publications in national and international journals and books.

An alumnus of the erstwhile Cotton College (now Cotton University), Das completed her MA, MPhil, and PhD in geography from Gauhati University, with specialisation in social geography.

She began her teaching career at Cotton College in 1999, joined Gauhati University as assistant professor in 2010, and became professor in 2017.

Her doctoral research, completed in 2009, focused on education, occupation, and social change among tribal women in Assam.

With 27 years of teaching and research experience, she has supervised 7 MPhil and 10 PhD scholars, with 10 more currently under supervision. Her academic work includes 72 research publications, three authored books, and four edited volumes.

She has also completed research projects funded by UGC and ICSSR and has received multiple academic grants and awards.

Das has presented research in several countries, including South Africa, Germany, Japan, Hungary, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Her work spans social, cultural, and urban geography, with research interests covering tribal studies, gender, crime and criminology, man-animal conflict, food geographies, and sustainability.

She has also held several academic and administrative positions, including head of department, dean of science, member of academic and governing bodies, and roles in multiple national and regional geography and social science organisations.

The fellowship connects her to an international network of geographers and researchers working on global geographical issues.
