Guwahati: The Central Water Commission (CWC) has issued a fresh advisory warning of a possible flood-like situation in parts of Northeast India amid forecasts of continuous rainfall over the next few days.
According to the advisory, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted persistent rainfall across the region till May 4, which could lead to a significant rise in water levels in major rivers and tributaries between May 1 and May 6.
The warning covers several districts in Assam, including areas in the Barak Valley.
Among the rivers under close watch is the Jiabharali River in Sonitpur district, where water levels are expected to rise sharply.
The main stem of the Brahmaputra river is also likely to witness elevated water levels in districts such as Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Sonitpur and Dhubri.
Similarly, the Barak river may swell in Cachar and Karimganj districts.
The advisory further identified rivers including the Kushiyara River and the Katakhal River in Karimganj and Hailakandi districts as vulnerable to rising water levels during the forecast period.
Authorities have been directed to remain on high alert and closely monitor river conditions to prevent any untoward incidents.
The advisory also extends to Tripura, where rivers such as the Muhari, Burima, Gumti, Khowai, Manu, Haora and Juri are expected to remain under close watch over the next two to three days.
State disaster management authorities and district administrations have been advised to take precautionary measures, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas, as the region braces for continued rainfall and possible flooding.
