Haflong: The battle for Dima Hasaoโs lone Assembly seat, 113-Haflong (ST), is intensifying as candidates vie for the support of local communities ahead of the April 9 polls.
Counting will take place on May 4.
Nandita Gorlosa of the Indian National Congress, who joined the party on March 23 after being denied a BJP ticket, spent Friday engaging with shopkeepers and traders at Haflong Market.
โReal progress begins when we listen to our people and act on their needs,โ she said, pledging to build a self-reliant Haflong that protects its hills, rivers, and forests.
Challenging her, Rupali Langthasa of the BJP stressed youth employment and infrastructure development. โOur focus will be on creating sustainable jobs and improving connectivity while preserving Dima Hasaoโs natural heritage,โ she said.
Meanwhile, Daniel Langthasa of the National Peopleโs Party highlighted environmental threats. โWe need policies that protect both our people and our ecosystem,โ he stated.
The district, known for its scenic hills and rich biodiversity, has lost around 20% of its forest cover since 2001. Illegal rat-hole coal mining, limestone quarrying, and deforestation have contributed to soil erosion, water contamination, and habitat loss, raising urgent concerns among local communities.
Following the withdrawal of Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) candidate Anjosh Terang, the race has narrowed to a triangular contest.
Voters are closely watching which candidate can best balance development, environmental conservation, and the rights of indigenous communities.
