Guwahati: The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) removed six members from the party after allegations surfaced that they supported rival leaders and candidates.

State president Dilip Saikia took the decision under clauses XXV-A and XXV-B of the party constitution.

Party insiders revealed that the removed members had allegedly backed leaders or candidates from opposing political groups.

The members removed are Gagan Chandra Mandal of Laokhowa Mandal in Kaliabor, Kishore Karmakar of West Kaliabor Mandal, Guru Prasad Upadhyay, general secretary of West Kaliabor Mandal, Tushanta Kalita, general secretary of East Kaliabor Mandal, Mani Hazarika, Kaliabor district head of BJP SC Morcha, and Pinki Mirdha Chuna, general secretary of the BJP Tea Community Morcha.

In another move, the party imposed a six-year suspension on nine other members who contested against officially endorsed BJP candidates or candidates supported by NDA partners.

A key figure among those disciplined is Jayanta Kumar Das from the Dispur constituency, who, after being denied the party nomination, contested the election independently and criticized the party leadership.
