Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has suffered a setback in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, with at least 30 functionaries resigning from the party, days after the exit of Cabinet Minister Nandita Garlosa.

According to resignation letters dated March 23, the leaders have stepped down from their organisational posts as well as primary membership with immediate effect. Those who resigned include former district presidents, members of autonomous councils and office-bearers of various frontal organisations.

The resignations cut across multiple constituencies, including Haflong, Mahur, Langting and Dautuhaja, indicating a wider organisational churn within the hill district.

Sources familiar with the developments said the move was driven by growing dissatisfaction among local leaders over what they described as neglect, lack of recognition and unease with recent political decisions within the party.

Garlosa’s recent departure is understood to have intensified these concerns, with party insiders indicating that her exit may have acted as a trigger for the coordinated resignations.

While the leaders have not formally announced their next course of action, there are indications that some of them may shift allegiance to the Congress, which has been attempting to expand its presence in the region.

The BJP has not issued an official statement on the resignations. However, party sources acknowledged that the development reflects underlying tensions within the district unit.
