Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday, March 22, strongly criticised the BJP-led state government, accusing it of attaching political expectations to the delivery of welfare benefits.

He further claimed that such methods are being used to exert influence over citizens, particularly women. Gogoi noted that welfare programmes were already in place before the BJP came to power and said that, at that time, people were free to receive benefits without being linked to any political group.

Referring to schemes like Mamoni, Majoni and Baideo, along with benefits for ASHA and Anganwadi workers, he said these programmes were earlier implemented without any political motive.

He appealed to the public to stand against what he called an atmosphere of fear and pressure created by the current government.

Referring to a remark by Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, Gogoi said the people of Assam deserve to live with dignity and without fear.

He also alleged that a new trend has emerged where individuals are expected to show political inclination to receive government assistance. He said that if a Congress-led alliance comes to power, welfare support would be given strictly based on eligibility, without any political conditions.

He also stated that people would not be required to follow or listen to programmes like Mann Ki Baat to receive assistance.

Speaking about the upcoming elections, Gogoi expressed confidence in the opposition, saying the alliance has gained considerable strength and is prepared to take on the BJP.
