Guwahati: Authorities in Nuh have booked twelve people for allegedly assaulting Meghalaya Police officers and attempting to free a detainee late Tuesday night.

The incident unfolded near Pinangwan police station, where officers fired shots in self-defense, resulting in injuries to a local man.

Tarif Khan, a resident of Shikarawa village, was struck in the leg and is now receiving treatment at PGI Rohtak; his condition is stable.

ASP Ayush Yadav of Nuh told reporters that the case stems from a complaint filed by Sub-Inspector Arkidalang Wahlang of Meghalaya Police, stationed in East Khasi Hills district.

Police said the altercation occurred while they were escorting Rahul Khan, son of Mohammad Rafiq from Wajidpur village, who had been arrested in connection with an ATM robbery case.

The suspect was being taken to Meghalaya on transit remand when he allegedly tried to seize the vehicleโ€™s steering wheel, attempting to flee.

A crowd of 20โ€“30 people, including some women, reportedly gathered around the vehicle during the chaos.

According to police, the bystanders tried to block the car, snatch the keys, and grab weapons from the officers.

Shots were fired by the police in self-defense to control the crowd and prevent the suspect from escaping.

The injured man, Tarif Khan, was hit in the leg, but officials emphasized that the firing aimed to disperse the mob rather than target anyone specifically.

Twelve individuals have now been named in the case for attacking police and obstructing government duties.

Pinangwan police reached the scene shortly after receiving information about the clash.

Investigators recovered two empty cartridges, blood-stained clothing, and blood samples, while the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team collected additional evidence.

Authorities noted that Rahul Khan is also wanted in multiple ATM theft cases, including reports registered in 2020 at Dwarka and Dabri police stations, and a 2021 case filed by Meghalayaโ€™s Special Cell.

Police added that he is suspected of carrying out similar ATM-related crimes in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

Separate units have been deployed to apprehend the remaining suspects, and the investigation is ongoing.
