Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday inaugurated the Saraighat Rana Smritisaudh, a war memorial commemorating the historic Battle of Saraighat, at Panbazar along the banks of the Brahmaputra.
The memorial honours the valour and sacrifice of 132 warriors, who fought to defend Assam against the Mughal forces in the 17th century. Built in traditional Ahom architectural style, the structure bears the engraved names of the fallen heroes and is intended to preserve the legacy of one of the most defining battles in the regionโs history.
The memorial has been envisioned not only as a tribute to the courage displayed during the Battle of Saraighat but also as a resource for researchers, students and history enthusiasts seeking to study Assamโs past.
Speaking after the inauguration, the Chief Minister said the memorial reflects the stateโs deep respect for its historical heritage and the sacrifices made by its people to safeguard Assamโs sovereignty. He emphasised the importance of preserving such milestones to strengthen historical awareness among future generations.
The Battle of Saraighat, fought in 1671 under the leadership of Ahom general Lachit Borphukan, is widely regarded as a turning point in Assamโs history and a powerful symbol of resistance against Mughal expansion.
On the same occasion, Sarma also laid the foundation stone for Phase III of the Brahmaputra riverfront development project, which includes the expansion of the riverfront park. Once completed, the project is expected to transform the area into a major recreational space for both residents and tourists.
Spread across about 2.5 acres within the premises of the old Deputy Commissionerโs office, the memorial and the planned riverfront expansion project is expected to promote heritage tourism.
