Guwahati: In a significant political development ahead of the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections, senior leaders of the United Peopleโ€™s Party Liberal (UPPL) have resigned from the party and are expected to join the Bodoland Peopleโ€™s Front (BPF), signalling fresh churn in the politics of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

UPPL leader and Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) MCLA Kampa Borgoyary, who served as the Leader of the Opposition in the BTC Legislative Council, resigned from the party and is likely to formally join the BPF later in the day. His departure is being viewed as a major setback for the UPPL, given his stature and organisational role within the council.

In his resignation letter addressed to UPPL president Pramod Boro and issued from Kokrajhar, Borgoyary cited his โ€œinability to continue active participation in the partyโ€™s activitiesโ€ as the reason for stepping down. He thanked the leadership and party members for the opportunity to serve as Vice President, describing his tenure as enriching and humbling.

Despite expressing confidence that the party would continue to advance under Boroโ€™s leadership, political observers suggest that his exit forms part of a broader realignment within the UPPL ahead of the crucial polls.

Alongside Borgoyary, UPPL Vice President Maothi Brahma Hazowary and Central Secretary Afzal Khan has also resigned from the party.

In his resignation letter dated March 1, 2026, also addressed to Pramod Boro from Kokrajhar, Khan cited his โ€œinabilities to participate in party activitiesโ€ as the reason for quitting. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Central Secretary and conveyed his best wishes for the partyโ€™s future.

Political sources indicated that Afzal Khan, Maothi Brahma Hazowary and Kampa Borgoyary are expected to join the BPF, suggesting a coordinated shift ahead of the Assembly elections. While the UPPL leadership has not yet issued an official response, the developments are being closely watched given the partyโ€™s role in the ruling alliance in Assam and its influence within the Bodoland Territorial Region.

The resignations are likely to intensify political contestation in Bodoland, where both the UPPL and the BPF have historically competed for influence within the BTC and the broader regional political landscape.
