Digboi: Political tensions are rising in Arunachal Pradesh as the Jan Andolan Anti-Corruption Movement has intensified its campaign against Chief Minister Pema Khandu, demanding that he step down over what it describes as โ€œserious, systemic irregularitiesโ€ in public works contracts.

Led by social activist Nabam Tagam, the group has alleged that contracts were awarded in violation of established procedures and were reportedly secured by family members and close associates, turning public office, in their words, into โ€œa private preserve.โ€ The movement claims these actions violate conflict-of-interest norms and undermine transparent governance.

Addressing reporters, Tagam said a long-pending case, reportedly under legal scrutiny since 2007, is nearing its final stage before the Supreme Court of India. โ€œThe die is cast,โ€ he said, expressing hope that the apex courtโ€™s verdict, expected in the coming weeks, will clarify the matter and ensure that justice is delivered.

The Andolan has demanded a court-monitored investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation, arguing that only an independent and supervised probe can examine the alleged irregularities. โ€œWhen questions cloud the highest office, stepping aside is the only honourable course,โ€ Tagam said.

The organisation has also sent memorandums to the Prime Minister, the President of India, and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, seeking intervention to ensure accountability and restore public trust.

According to Tagam, the movement is closely monitoring the legal proceedings and will continue its campaign until what it describes as a โ€œfair, free and fearless investigationโ€ is ensured.

As the state awaits the Supreme Courtโ€™s verdict, political tensions continue, with the issue affecting the state government.

At the time of filing this report, no official response had been issued by the Chief Ministerโ€™s Office.
