Imphal: An armed attack occurred at Kharam Vaiphei village in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district involving gunfire and explosives, causing property damage and distress among residents.
The attack drew strong condemnation from the Kuki Inpi South-West Sadar Hills and the Kharam Vaiphei Village Authority.
According to both bodies, the incident occurred around 7 a.m. when unidentified assailants allegedly opened fire and set off explosive devices within the village.
No casualties were reported, but several homes were damaged, leaving villagers in fear and distress.
The Kuki Inpi South-West Sadar Hills described the attack as ‘deeply disturbing and unacceptable,’ calling the violence under President’s Rule a serious matter.
The organisation warned that attacks like this put innocent lives at risk and could heighten communal tensions in an already fragile situation.
“The attack has created an atmosphere of fear and psychological distress among peaceful civilians. Any delay in decisive action could embolden anti-social elements and further destabilise the region,” the body stated, urging authorities to act swiftly.
It also called for the immediate identification and arrest of the perpetrators and for strict legal action to deter similar incidents in the future.
The Kharam Vaiphei Village Authority similarly condemned the assault, calling it a “cowardly and provocative act” aimed at disturbing local peace.
Highlighting the dangers posed by firearms and explosives in a civilian area, the authority stressed the need for proactive law enforcement and administrative measures to prevent recurrence.
It also appealed for increased vigilance and effective policing in vulnerable locations.
Both organisations reiterated their commitment to communal harmony and peace, cautioning against misinformation or inflammatory narratives that could worsen tensions.
They urged authorities to ensure swift justice and uphold the rule of law to protect civilians.
