Guwahati: The Meghalaya governmentโ€™s Fact-finding Committee will hear representations on October 13 regarding land ownership records and the proposed Shree Cement project at Lum Syrman in East Jaintia Hills district.

According to a public notice issued by the committee, the hearing will begin at 10 am at the Circuit House in Khliehriat. Individuals who have already submitted representations may appear before the panel in person and bring the relevant original documents.

The committee was constituted through a notification dated September 8, 2026, following a letter issued on September 3, 2026, to investigate the proposed establishment of Shree Cement Company in East Jaintia Hills.

The notice was issued by CVD Diengdoh, chairperson of the Fact-finding Committee and Commissioner and Secretary to the Meghalaya government.

A week earlier, the Jaiรฑtia National Council (JNC) had submitted a detailed representation to the committee, calling for an independent and evidence-based inquiry into the proposed cement project at Lum Syrman.

The council urged the panel to scrutinise original land records, transaction deeds and survey documents instead of relying exclusively on claims contained in the projectโ€™s environmental documentation.

The JNC also called on the committee to examine the original application records and establish how the proposed mining area corresponds with the broader certificate, using authenticated maps and boundary coordinates.

Furthermore, the council urged the panel to record statements from affected landholders, traditional heads of Elaka Nongkhlieh, community representatives, officials of the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board and project representatives before finalising its findings.

The October 13 hearing is expected to provide an opportunity for those who have submitted representations to present their concerns and supporting documents before the committee as it examines issues surrounding the proposed project.
