Aizawl: At least 11 murder cases have been registered in Mizoram’s Aizawl district since January this year, and 10 of them have been fully investigated, a police officer said on Thursday.

Aizawl Superintendent of Police (SP) Zosangliana told reporters that a total of 1,764 criminal cases were registered at various police stations under the Aizawl District Executive Force (DEF) from January to December 17. Theft and burglary remained the most common offences, accounting for 1,176 cases, or 66 per cent of the total.

He said that 2,000 offenders have been arrested in connection with these criminal cases.

Of the total 1,764 cases, investigations have been completed and charge sheets submitted in 1,009 cases, while 421 cases are under investigation and 333 cases remain pending, he said.

The SP said the conviction rate of offenders stood at 91.7 per cent.

According to Zosangliana, among major crimes, 11 murder cases were registered, of which investigations have been completed in 10 cases, while one case is still under investigation.

He further said that police in Aizawl district registered 32 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and arrested 36 people in drug-related cases.

A total of 158 cases of unnatural deaths were reported during the same period, including 30 suicides, 36 deaths due to drug overdose, 12 due to drowning, and 78 accidental deaths, he added.

The SP said law and order have been tightened in Aizawl district in view of the upcoming festive season to ensure the peaceful celebration of Christmas and New Year.

He added that special measures will also be taken to ensure residents comply with prohibitory orders on the bursting of firecrackers and use of other pyrotechnic materials during the festive season.
